China Warns Its Citizens Travelling to Canada to Exercise Caution amid rift over Hong Kong Law

A day after Trudeau government suspended extradition treaty with Hong Kong over recent security law, China has warned its citizens to exercise caution while travelling to Canada amid deepening tensions between Beijing and Ottawa

The warning, published on Monday by the Chinese embassy in Ottawa on the WeChat messaging app platform, said Chinese citizens should pay close attention to the local security situation.

China passed a controversial national security law in Hong Kong which it claims its internal matter.  The new law ban acts of subversion, secession, “terrorism” and collusion with foreign forces to suppress the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong.

On Friday, after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country was suspending the extradition treaty with Hong Kong due to the legislation, Canada also halted exports of sensitive military equipment and gears to the Hong Kong amid rising concerns about the impact of the security law on the city’s special rights status.

The current events further escalates the political and diplomatic crisis between the two countries that is already on boil because of China detaining two Canadians Michael Kovrig, a former diplomat, and Michael Spavor, a businessman, on charge of spying. The Canada claims the detention is purely political and pressure tactics by China to influence the ongoing extradition case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.
