Amar Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party Leader died in Singapore due to Kidney Failure

Amar Singh, Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party leader died today (August 1) at the age of 64 in Singapore due to kidney failure. He had undergone kidney transplant in 2011 and was not keeping well for some time. He was currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.

Amar Singh, was born on 27 January 1956, in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh and had most of his education in Kolkata and went on to complete his law degree from Law College there. He had his political journey from the state of Uttar Pradesh as a leader of Samajwadi Party. He was the general secretary of the Samajwadi Party and was also a member of the Rajya Sabha.

In 2010, he resigned from all the posts of Samajwadi Party and was later expelled from the party by its chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav in the same year. After being expelled from Samajwadi Party, his relations warmed up with RSS and BJP.

Singh also spent a brief period in judicial custody in 2011. He finally retired from politics and said, “I want to give more time to my wife and my family.”

In 2016, he was elected to Rajya Sabha with support from Samajwadi Party even after facing a stiff opposition from a section of the party including the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav. He was also reinstated as one of the general secretaries of the party in October 2016.

Being active on social media, he had earlier in the day tweeted paying tributes to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak on his 100th death anniversary. In another tweet he had wished people on Eid.

Amar Singh maintained good relations with all those matters in corporate world and film industry. Such relations also ignited quite a few controversies in his political career.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his condolence message tweeted “Amar Singh Ji was an energetic public figure. In the last few decades, he witnessed some of the major political developments from close quarters. He was known for his friendships across many spheres of life. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his friends & family. Om Shanti.”
