Guwahati International Airport

New Terminal to be built at Guwahati Airport by June 2022

A new terminal building will soon open at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) in Guwahati, which is the main hub for travel in Northeast India. More than 39 per cent of the project work has been completed. The new terminal building is expected to cost INR 1232 crore and is scheduled to be put into use by June 2022.

Currently, Guwahati airport receives more than 6 million passengers per year. After the completion of construction of the new terminal building, the airport will be able to receive 4,300 domestic and 200 international passengers during peak hours and approx 10 million passengers per year.

The terminal will be equipped with 64 check-in counters, 20 self-service check-in kiosks, 10 aero bridges, 6 baggage carousels and in-line baggage security screening system. It will be an energy-saving building. The terminal has a total construction area of 1,02,500 square meters and will be divided into two floors, departure at the upper floor and arrival at the lower floor.

In addition to these two main floors, there will be two other floors. The mezzanine between two floors, a part of the mezzanine floor will be used as an air-side arrival corridor for passengers who disembark from the boarding bridge. The other part will be used as a service floor for the luggage handling system for outbound luggage.

The design of the new Guwahati airport terminal building is inspired by the mythical figure Icarus, which is one of the earliest inspirations for human flight. The airport roof is designed with the art of Origami, which is an ode to human effort, crafts and innovation. Due to the need for a solid wall surface, the facade of the terminal building will reflect the same origami language in some parts.

Guwahati airport is serving to the fastest growing cities in India and has connectivity with Southeast Asia regions. Moreover, the airport will attract more passengers in the coming years. As the government pays more and more attention to making the Northeast regions more accessible through various air connection plans, the largest and busiest airport in the Northeast will witness the development of infrastructure.
