Sourav Ganguly undergoes Primary Angioplasty, hospitalized in Kolkata

The President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and former captain of India cricket team, Sourav Ganguly, has been admitted to the Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata on Saturday (Jan 2) around 1 pm, after complaining about chest pain.

Currently, he is receiving percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or primary angioplasty treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Sourav Ganguly, 48 years old, suffered from the chest discomfort during exercising on the treadmill at his home gym. He had a family history of coronary heart disease or ischemic heart disease (IHD).

Dr Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands Hospital, has informed that when he arrived at the hospital, his heart rate was 70 per minute, blood pressure was 130/80 mm of Hg and other clinical parameters were within normal limits. His ECG showed hyper acute ST segment elevation in the inferior and lateral leads.

“Echo showed mild inferior wall hypokinesia with preserved overall left ventricular function. He is stable haemodynamically. He has received loading doses of dual anti platelets and statin and is undergoing primary angioplasty now,” Dr Rupali Basu added.

Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, also wished him a speedy recovery and tweeted, “Sad to hear that @SGanguly99 suffered a mild cardiac arrest and has been admitted to hospital. Wishing him a speedy and full recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family!.”

Sourav Ganguly assumed the presidency of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2019 and is recognized as one of the top captains to have led the country. He is known for starting a new era in Indian cricket as he supported young people and created a fighting unit that has achieved great success around the world.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has tweeted on Saturday, “I wish and pray for the speedy recovery of @SGanguly99. I’ve spoken to his family. Dada is stable and is responding well to the treatment.”

Sourav Ganguly led India to the famous victory of the home Test series against Steve Waugh’s conquering Australian team in 2001. He also led the India cricket team to the finals of the ICC World Cup in 2003. Under his command, India won the ICC Champions Trophy. He also led India to their maiden Test series victory in Pakistan.

Earlier this week, Sourav Ganguly had also cleared things up about joining politics before the polls of the West Bengal Assembly next year. He had said that he had met with the governor of the state on invitation.
