GM Canada announces investment of CA$ 1 Billion to Manufacture EV 600

GM Canada, formally known as General Motors of Canada Company, has announced that the company has signed a tentative deal with labor union Unifor to make an investment of about CA$ 1 billion to manufacture commercial electric vans at its CAMI Assembly Plant located in Ingersoll, Ontario.

As part of the tentative deal, which still needs to be ratified by trade union workers, GM Canada has agreed to start commercial production of the electric van EV 600 on a large scale at its CAMI Assembly Plant.

Unifor National President Mr. Jerry Dias said that in addition to this major investment, the agreement will also mean new products, new opportunity for jobs and business, as well as job security for workers.

He said in a statement that more detailed information about the tentative deal will be made available to Unifor Local 88 members at a ratification meeting which is scheduled to take place online on this Sunday (Jan 17). He further informed that the results of the ratification vote would be announced next day on Monday (Jan 18).

Any further specifics of the agreement were not made public on Friday night.

In an official statement, a spokeswoman for GM Canada said that the plan consists of manufacturing BrightDrop EV 600s that will provide a cleaner way of delivery and logistics services to move goods in a more efficient manner.

Unifor stated that if the tentative deal is approved, it will increase all the investments negotiated by the union to almost CA$ 6 billion after new deals were approved with General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler in last year which also supported by the Federal and Ontario governments.

It said that the Ford deal in September included CA$ 1.95 billion to bring the production of a new engine derivative to Windsor and battery electric vehicle to Oakville. On the other hand, the Fiat Chrysler deal included CA$ 1.5 billion to build plug-in hybrid vehicles and battery electric vehicles.

In November last year, GM Canada agreed to invest CA$ 1.3 billion to bring about 1,700 jobs to Oshawa, CA$ 109 million for new transmission work for the Corvette and support the continuation of production of V8 engines in St. Catharines.
