Mridula Sinha, Former Goa Governor, died at 77

The former Governor of Goa and the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mridula Sinha passed away at age 77 at AIIMS in Delhi on Wednesday (Nov 18), nine days before her 78th birthday.

While in Goa, she was also appointed by PM Modi as the brand ambassador of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA).

Mridula Sinha was a native of Muzaffarpur and will be remembered by people for launching a cultural event called “chaand ke saath” in the lawns of the Governor House. Her speech praised the Goan mangoes and gave to dignitaries across the country.

From building a cowshed in Raj Bhavan for her daily worship to opening the doors of this historic Portuguese residence to citizens for the first time throughout the year, her tenure was unusual in many ways.

In October 2015, she surprised everyone when she, as Goa University chancellor, unexpectedly refused to approve a varsity executive council decision to extend the service to the then university vice-chancellor.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were prominent personalities expressed their sadness over the death of the first woman Governor of Goa and offered condolences to her family.

“The death of former Goa Governor and senior BJP leader Mridula Sinha ji is very sad. She worked for the nation, society and organization throughout her life. She was also an accomplished writer, who will also be remembered for her writing. My deepest condolences to her family. Om Shanti,” the Home Minister said.

Mridula Sinha was born on November 27, 1942 in Muzaffarpur district of Bihar. She completed her post graduate study after her marriage to a former Union minister Dr Ram Kripal Sinha.

She was a prolific writer and began to write short stories about culture and rural traditions. Some of her works were also published in Hindi magazines and later compiled into the anthology entitled “Bihar ki lok kathayen” (Folk tales of Bihar).

One of her most famous works is the biography of Rajmata Vijayaraje Scindia, called Ek Thi Rani Aisi Bhi. Other of her famous works includes Dampatya Ki Dhoop-Chhanh (on marriage), Sita Puni Boli, Ahalya Uvach, Jyon Mehandi Ke Rang, Atishaya, etc.
